• Finding The Best Stove For You

The flickering flames of your stove are likely to be the focal point of your room, and so, finding the right stove for the size and style of your room is key to creating a stunning centrepiece. We’ve put together some of the most important factors to consider when finding the right stove for you.

    Safety First!

When purchasing a fire safety is paramount. Looking out for the HETAS and Gas Safe Register logos, purchasing from an authorised retailer and ensuring you have a safe, registered installer are all key steps that will ensure your stove is safe and correctly installed.

Do you live in a smoke control area?

The Clean Air Acts of 1956 and 1968 were introduced to prevent smog that was caused by the widespread burning of ordinary house coal, meaning those in smoke controlled areas, such as town and city centres, have restrictions on emitting smoke from the chimney when using a wood burner. However, DEFRA Smoke Exempt, or Approved, appliances can burn wood legally in UK Smoke Control Areas, thanks to their modified manufacturing that limits the amount they can be starved of air. This means DEFRA approved stoves produce minimum levels of combustion, can burn efficiently without producing unnecessary smoke and therefore comply to the Clean Air Act.

    What Fuel?

Deciding what fuel you want to burn is one of the deciding factors when purchasing a stove. Wood burning fuels only burn wood while multi-fuel stoves can burn coal, wood and smokeless fuel.

It’s worth looking into fuel costs and efficiency before making your decision as well as considering the amount of room you have to store fuel.

    What size?

Size and heat output is a key factor when choosing a stove and one that depends on many factors including, the size of your room, chimney, insulation and the size of your windows.

Depending on the above factors, you will need 1kw of heat for every 14 cubic metres of space to make your room 21°C when its 1°C outside. To calculate this, multiply the height, width and length of your room in metres and divide this by 14to give you a rough gauge of what stove heat output you need.

Our fully refundable surveys are a great way to find out from an industry expert what appliance is suitable for you and your home. Contact Us for more information.

    What style?

Your stove is designed to be the focal point of your room, so choosing the right style is paramount to ensuring your stove fits seamlessly into your room, whilst also creating a stunning statement piece. Fires Direct have a wide range of traditional and contemporary stoves to choose from so you can find the right style for your room.

  • Briquette Benefits

Stocking up on fuel is vital for staying warm this winter. However, many are concerned about the economical and environmental effects of burning fuels, such as wood and coal, and are therefore looking for environmentally friendly alternatives. This is where briquettes come in. Made from compressed wood shavings, sawdust, plants, charcoal, peat, cardboard or paper, briquettes have a host of benefits that could save you money and lower your carbon footprint at the same time!

    Smokeless

Because they don’t contain any polluting substances, such as sulphur, briquettes do not emit polluting gases or create excess smoke, and can therefore be burnt freely in smoke control zones and help to reduce combustion.

As opposed to loose biomass, briquettes are concentrated and so reduce the risk of flyaway dust, which in turn reduces the risk of fires and explosions.

    Economical

Since briquettes are made from waste materials, such as paper, wood shavings, plants and peat, briquettes are a cheaper alternative to burning wood or coal, and, with a longer burn life, you can spend less money on refuelling!

    Efficient

Thanks to its compressed form, briquettes have a lower moisture content, higher bulk density and lower ash content, all of which enable them to burn more efficiently, more controlled and slower to provide around two hours burn time and a higher heat output, depending on your stove.

    Convenient

Briquettes are usually cylindrical, rectangular or cubical and relatively small in size, reducing waste volume by up to 90%. Unlike other fuels, briquettes are also non-hazardous and clean to touch, making them easier to handle, transport and store.

With briquettes made from forestry waste, briquettes are more readily available and sustainable than traditional fuels. This also means you can also make your own briquettes with machines like the De Vielle Eco Briquette Maker, allowing you to use up waste items and ensure you never run out of fuel!

De Vielle Eco Briquette Maker: £29.99

Whether you’re making your briquettes with the De Vielle Eco Briquette Maker, or buying them from a trusted fuel retailer, briquettes are a cheaper and greener alternative to burning traditional solid fuels, so instead of worrying about fuel costs this winter, you can enjoy the flickering flames of your fire!

Purchase any stove from Fires Direct and receive a free £50 fuel voucher for Coals2U, so you can stock up on fuel this winter.

    Safety First!

  • Heating Your Home On A Budget

Heating your home over winter can prove costly, however, by following these simple steps, you can save money and stay warm this winter.

A Clean Chimney Is A Cheap Chimney

Most importantly, having your chimney swept regularly ensures your appliance is safe by minimising the risk of chimney fires and protecting against any damage or dangerous gases, but, having your chimney swept also keeps your fire running efficiently to save you time and money! It is recommended you employ a chimney sweep at least twice a year if you are burning wood or bituminous house coal, and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels.

Meanwhile, cleaning the throat plate is vital to ensure there is a clear flue way for smoke to leave your appliance, making it safe and efficient.

With a clean and safe chimney, you can avoid paying out for costly damages and your fire will burn efficiently, saving you money on fuel. For further information on cleaning your stove read our 5 Top Tips!

TOP TIP: the best time to have your chimney swept are just before the heating season or after your fire has been out of use.

    Stove Maintenance Pays

Regular maintenance of your stove helps you to avoid costly repairs in the long run. Small tasks like emptying the ash from your coal or wood burning stove helps to avoid ash build up, which can cause the grate bars to overheat, damaging your stove and causing unnecessary risk.

Meanwhile, the rope seal on your stove door ensures no excess air seeps into the firebox, but, this rope is subject to general wear and tear. Replacing it regularly can help maintain optimum efficiency, safety and heat output to overall save you money.

TOP TIP: to check the efficiency of your rope seal close the stove door on a piece of paper, then gently try to pull it free of the door. If the paper pulls free easily, it is likely your rope needs replacing.

Find The Right Fuel For You

Choosing the right fuel for your fire is essential to gaining maximum efficiency and value out of your fire. When choosing your fuel consider whether it is easy to ignite, its heat output and C02 emissions to fully decide which fuel is most suitable, and economical, for your needs and fire. Read our Multi-Fuel and Wood Fuels articles for further fuel recommendations and advice.

Following these steps are quick and easy ways to keep your overall fuel and fire costs down. Plus, many of our stoves come with advanced technical features to help maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of your stove, so all you have to worry about this winter is enjoying the flickering flames of your fire!

  • Benefits Of An AGA Stove

With winter upon us nothing seems more inviting than the flickering flames and welcoming warmth of an AGA stove on a cold evening. Aside from this relaxing winter scene, AGA stoves have an endless list of benefits for you, your home and the environment!

    Ellesmere 5 AGA Stove £944.99

Quality At The Heart Of Your Stove

Needless to say, the AGA name is synonymous with quality, tradition and expert craftsmanship and is renowned for its robust and attractive cast iron and steel materials that provide the warmth associated with a wood burner. Oozing British heritage, AGA stoves are manufactured with the same dedication and expert craftsmanship as they have always been, undergoing meticulous inspection and colour checking to ensure a perfect finish every time. However, the modern AGA doesn’t just look the part, it also contains state-of-the-art technology to help it run smoothly and efficiently for you and the environment!

    Efficient and Eco-Friendly

Providing you buy well-seasoned wood with a moisture level below 20%, an AGA wood burner can be beneficial for the environment as well as your wallet!

An AGA wood burning stove can be up to 85% efficient thanks to its ergonomic design that allows it to emit as much heat throughout your room as possible, unlike open fires which are only 10-20% efficient. This means wood burners can heat the largest of rooms and even keep your home warmer for longer as they continue to give our heat even after the fire has died down! Meanwhile, unlike coal, wood is a sustainable heat source and the amount of CO2 released when burning wood is equal to that absorbed by a growing tree.

Remember: Purchase from a supplier that sources their wood from sustainable plantations.

    Ellesmere 6 AGA Stove £1,274.99

    Suitable for Smoke Control Areas

The Clean Air Acts of 1956 and 1968 were introduced to prevent smog that was caused by the widespread burning of ordinary house coal, meaning those in smoke controlled areas, such as town and city centres, have restrictions on emitting smoke from the chimney when using a wood burner. However, certain AGA wood burners are specifically engineered for use in smoke control areas, meaning they can be burnt safely with the lowest possible emissions. Look out for our range of DEFRA approved AGA stoves which are approved for smoke controlled areas.

    Squeaky Clean Viewing

No one wants to view the glowing flames of your AGA wood burner through dirty glass, nor do you want to spend hours cleaning it! Thankfully, most of our AGA wood burners feature an Active Air Wash System that prevents soot build up by drawing air to the top of the stove where it is pre-heated and directed in front of the glass. This means your glass stove door remains clean to give you a perfect flame picture and maximum visual impact for the whole room.
